Should Nurses Work for 8 Hour or 12 Hour Shifts?

The regular hour working shift of nurses before was 8 hours. But times have changed and nurses now work 12-hour shifts.

Facilities and nurses who favor 12-hour shifts have their good reasons for doing so but those who advocate for 8-hour shifts contend that there is a lack of effectiveness and safety for those who work longer than10 hours.

Below are some things to consider when creating your nurse’s work schedule.

There are time when becaue of patient needs or staffing demands, a nurse can actually be working for more than 12 hours. Even if the nurses schedule has ended, nurses have no choice but to work past it. Registered nurses are not protected by any work-hour policy in the country. Perhaps the schedule states a 12-hour shift for a nurse but many times they work more than 13 hours.

The strain of long shifts can lead to errors. Longer work hours increase the likelihood of errors.

You don’t expose yourself to injuries or burn out if you follow an 8-hour shift. There are many workplace injuries that happen because nurses work long hours and so they lack sleep and have slower reaction times. Research has shown that nurses who work more than 10 hours will more likely experience burnout.

Nurses are important to get patients the care that they need. Without nurses, patients may die from a lack of medical attention and care.

If nurses work 12-hour shifts, then there is less turnover for patients. The best possible care would not be provided to patients if a tired nurse works for more than 13 hours.

Long shifts can impact nurses’ health negatively. But if a nurse works longer shifts, then she spends fewer days and less time overall commuting to work. There is more flexibility with longer shifts. They get longer stretches of time at home if they have longer shifts. 8-hour shifts mean that staff can be home for several hours a day. But 12-hour shifts allow nurses to have four-day weekends. With 12-hour shifts there is scheduling flexibility for your nurses. It reduces absenteeism, increases retention and boosts morale.

You can work easily with longer shifts if you are the management. You only need to schedule two shifts a day. With shorter shifts, you may have more variety of start and end times. This can be confusing to everyone. In order to keep track of employees’ work hours use an employee time clock.

Each organization will have a different nursing shift. Your staff, your patients, and your bottom line will definitely be affected by the shifts and so the things mentioned above should help you think about this.
